I was against the Satanic Panic movement and I hope that it never comes back.
It involved a lot of adults tricking themselves into believing something quite fantastical
During that evil Satanic Panic, society was not really using any common sense to interrogate those ideas, . During the Satanic Panic ,people claimed that they witnessed multiple murders when they were children, or that they were raped with knives.
No one during the Satanic Panic was going...”alright how does that work? Where are all of people who are "missing" and who ended up supposedly sacrificed to the dark lord? How can you live through being raped with a knife? Where are these alleged tunnels under the daycare centers?
It is theorized that the Satanic Panic was a reactionary response to women rightfully joining the workforce in more numbers and having to leave their children with people who weren't related to them (i.e daycare centers). The Satanic Panic people were like the flat earthers.
Satan was back then always headline news. It was a true hysteria. People actually went to jail.
But like during the Satanic Panic, people get swept up all sorts of in cults and movements. It's a good thing to step back.
The truth id, people uncritically accept things as long as those things align with their beliefs. During the Satanic Panic, there were stories that were nuts and shocking. Similar to the junk science of hypnotizing people until people uncovered memories of abuse - (as long as that gets the results that people want, it does not matter whether there’s real science behind it)
The Satanic Panic was similar to sexual fetishes and was also the result of life back then being too easy and people having more time on their hands.(similar to how Liberalism 1.0 morphed into Liberalism 2.0 recently)
It is pretty safe to turn inwards and become intensely self reflective in weird times like during the Satanic Panic
It seems like an attempt of total self control in a same vein to self harm or anorexia.
The world is frightful and chaotic, but like during the Satanic Panic, people can control something about themselves and to decide who they are and how they are permitted to talk about themselves.
Mediocre white people who don't want to have to work harder at life, skill, or hobby to be affirmed at - don't fret. You can feel better just by adopting:
A few dozen oppressed groups you have no knowledge about that you somehow make yourself to represent as an activist,
At least three new roleplay body types, along with a spectrum of personalities, and a healthy sprinkling of numerous rare neurodivergences with some delayed self-diagnoses.
Then before you know it, you are unique and valued. As an added bonus, you get granted outsider status to play the system while also having to face no real structural obstacles in your life.
Fuse this with a sense of self so sadly alienated it has lead a generation of young people to understand themselves on terms that are almost archaic:
“I linked my personality with my personal spiritual beliefs at the time, my beliefs about my own past lives and the sadness carried over from them in regards to exile and wariness of my own potential for aggression. I felt my spirit was that of a anguished person enlisted in wars they never wanted to fight dropped into a perplexed person’s body.
This is no longer seen as fringe, peculiar means of a person understanding themself. Younger people now claim that their bodies are infested with witches/warlocks, ghosts/ghouls, spirits That can be a slippery slope
Like, imagine if the goths in the 1980s and 1990s or the emo youth of the 2000s (decade) considered themselves not just irritating outsiders but also a entirely different species from the normies.
Now let’s further imagine if, instead of being ignored or ridiculed, this belief was assertively affirmed by their social structures and incentivized by bigger social trends demanding that people should only be treated fairly if they can demonstrate victimhood.
Communities always are going to learn the same lesson that the Goths learned. When your group becomes cool, then the scenesters begin to arrive. Since it's cool to be whatever the flavor of the month is, and all people want to be cool, then take a wild guess what all these people will try and do?
Though scenesterism has the ability to have negative impacts on lives in any number of various ways.
The big issues is if the inevitable cool becomes non cool. Only now you will have a whole generation of people who if they want to go back, they can't go back (depending on how far into it they went).
I don’t know if they are going to pick up on that exact lesson. There is a lot more positive id reinforcement at the teen age group from a lot of media forms, from teachers, then there was for the goth subculture.
